I bought my hubby a hornby train set thinking it was made in Britain only to find out it was made in China! Was Hornby ever made there?
so why has it got stamped on it “made in China”?
I heard some of their stuff is made in their factory in Margate but most of it comes from China nowadays

As far as I am aware, Hornby was always made in the UK. The only factory I know of was in Liverpool.

yes –
"The Beginning of Hornby
Frank Hornby was granted his patent and soon put the invention into production under the name ‘Mechanics Made Easy’. This led to the establishment of Meccano Ltd in 1907. Such was the success of the company, Frank Hornby had to regularly move his factory to new and larger premises. Meccano was to become one of the classic toys of all time"
"Hornby came under increasing pressure from rival company Tri-ang Railways, who had developed plastic bodied trains and carried out its manufacturing at a purpose-built factory in Margate, Kent. Hornby Dublo and Tri-ang Railways rivalled each other during the early 1950s and following the acquisition in 1964 of Meccano Ltd was taken over by Lines Bros (the parent company of Rovex Scale Models Ltd, manufactures of Tri-ang Railways), in 1965 and became Tri-ang Hornby."
edit: because the chinese bought the company in 1995 nd moved production to china

Yes, up until around ten years ago! Like the rest of our best, they’ve winged their way to China so that the great and good in the boardrooms can show wonderful profitability to their shareholders! Sorry, i said ‘can’ i should have said ‘could’. By ‘benefiting from poorly paid workers and joining the ‘global’ economy those wonderful directors have now put not only the poor Chinese workers out of work but they too will be jobless soon as we probably won’t have either anyone left in this country capable of manufacturing this product nor indeed any parents able to purchase them any more! The global economy, the politicians dream and the realists nightmare!

The only thing made in the UK is unemployed people. The government have allowed all the jobs to be outsourced abroad. They have sold all the family silver and now greedy bankers have finished us off.
But worry not, THEY will be ok.

The Chinese will make anything as long you give them the world’s smallest instructions.

Well done you and lucky him, Hornbys office is in "Margate" Kent. they like other companys moved the manufactureing of the product to "China" some 10yrs ago. As with most things bought to day, there all made their.
Well he`s got what he maybe has wanted for years. The only thing is now the bug (model trains) has bitten him, he`ll be trying to talk you into him having the spare bedroom as "his model" room. they all want this……so your battle with him begins. At least you`ll know where he is all the time, because he`ll get "very involved" with his new hobby. Come birthdays and xmas you won`t be "stuck" anymore as to what to get him.
A lot of "big boys" have a hankering for this type of hobby. it has a very big following…….Just 1 thing more………..call it a "model railway" and refer to his trains etc. as models rather than the word "trainset" which is what "little kids" have……..until he upsets you, the call it a train set…………just to annoy him.

For the best in British “oo” Gauge model railways buy the original Hornby Dublo all metal construction (not plastic Hornby) or Wrenn who split from the Lines Bro’s i.e. Triang & bought out the Hornby Dublo Moulds left over from their take over of Hornby Dublo. As stated all metal construction, “oo” gauge, will last for ever, even out live you, plenty of spares available, join the H.R.C.A. the H.D. Collectors Assoc. Best place to buy: ebay. Regards, A.

REAL Hornby oo gauge ceased production in 1964. Neither Wrenn or that horrible cheap Triang stuff ever filled the gap properly. My Dublo will still be running long after the current Chinese made trash has fallen apart. Won’t have the stuff in the house.
